At the debate on Serbia<\/strong> in the European Parliament<\/strong>, Serbian MPs set out clear demands to the European Union<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Borko Stefanovi\u0107<\/strong> from the Freedom and Justice Party (SSP)<\/strong> said that the European Commission<\/strong> is slowly realizing what the problem is, and that is Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107<\/strong>. He also mentioned the president’s pressure on free media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have nervous reactions from our regime, a spiral of violence is spreading in society. Vu\u010di\u0107<\/strong> is ready to bring the country to the brink of destruction. The EC<\/strong> is starting to understand the problem that exists in Serbia<\/strong>, and that is that we have Vu\u010di\u0107’s<\/strong> regime which ingratiates itself with your institutions but has no intention of bringing Serbia<\/strong> into the EU<\/strong> because that would be the ruin of his regime and him. That means calling for accountability, fighting corruption, free media, unlike today when he is trying to shut down television stations N1<\/strong> and Nova<\/strong>,” he said in his address to the EP<\/strong> members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freedom Is Ours, and the EU Is Here to Help Us<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

He particularly touched on the need to organize early elections, and Biljana \u0110or\u0111evi\u0107<\/strong> from the Green-Left Front<\/strong> also set out other demands. Among them are sanctions for Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107<\/strong>, Ana Brnabi\u0107<\/strong>, Ivica Da\u010di\u0107<\/strong>, and \u0110ura Macut<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“By favoring stability over democracy, the EU<\/strong> is enabling the SNS<\/strong> to create an authoritarian state in Serbia<\/strong>, portraying the EU<\/strong> as anti-Serbian and weak. This has led to the lowest level of support for the EU<\/strong> from Serbian citizens… We demand a clear condemnation of police brutality, that pressure be exerted on the regime in Serbia<\/strong>, we want sanctions, a travel ban, asset freezes for the key actors of the regime – Brnabi\u0107<\/strong>, Vu\u010di\u0107<\/strong>, Macut<\/strong>, Da\u010di\u0107<\/strong>, from police officers to officials who carried out torture, to investigate whether the money of European taxpayers is being used for the regime’s corruption, pressure on the regime to accept elections as a solution to the crisis,” she stated during her address to the MPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stefanovi\u0107<\/strong> stated: “We must have early elections and we propose elections at all levels. We must go to them unified, in coordination with all actors, including students. We want elections, with pressure on the regime to prevent them from stealing votes and beating people. You must understand that our freedom is ours, and the EU<\/strong> is here to help us, and a special message is for the EPP<\/strong> – it’s a charade because Vu\u010di\u0107<\/strong> slandered the EP<\/strong> members, it’s a disgrace that Vu\u010di\u0107<\/strong> is a member of your family.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pavle Grbovi\u0107<\/strong> from the Free Citizens Movement<\/strong> pointed out that words from the EU<\/strong> are no longer enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Words are not enough. The EC<\/strong> and member states must call out the democratic backsliding. Do not punish Serbia<\/strong> and its citizens; the target of criticism and measures must be those who are truly responsible for the collapse of democracy,” he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zdravko Pono\u0161<\/strong> from SRCE<\/strong> spoke about the sonic cannon, growing violence, and the brutality of the police and the regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Don’t be disappointed with Serbia<\/strong> because there is no reason, be disappointed with Vu\u010di\u0107<\/strong>,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They Are Watching Us on TV in Serbia, It’s Time to Send a Message<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

MEPs also spoke about the situation in Serbia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The EP<\/strong> has always been clear and vocal about the situation in Serbia<\/strong>. We have condemned the democratic backsliding, the pressure on the media, and the weakening of the rule of law. We have also condemned the shocking escalation of violence against citizens by the police. Peaceful protests are not a crime and they are the foundation of democracy. I also salute the youth of Serbia<\/strong>, we remember the bicycle ride to Strasbourg<\/strong> and the run to Brussels<\/strong> – they carried a message of determination to live in a democratic and European Serbia<\/strong>,” said the Green MEP Vladimir Prebili\u010d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also added: “They are watching us on TV in Serbia<\/strong> today. This is an opportunity to send a message that the world has noticed, that Europe<\/strong> is listening, that the EU<\/strong> sees you and that we are with you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MEP Helmut Brandst\u00e4tter<\/strong> also spoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I admire you. You are a great example for us too, in our democracies (to students). As for the media, I want to tell the Serbian media that you are not politicians, but media and you should report. From the EC<\/strong>, I expect strong support for Vu\u010di\u0107<\/strong>. Serbia<\/strong> must be a part of the EU<\/strong>, but it cannot become a part of it with the Vu\u010di\u0107<\/strong> regime,” the MEP said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
