The European Union<\/strong> is hardening its stance toward Belgrade<\/strong> due to severe police repression in Serbia, while protests are persistently ongoing, writes the Brussels portal “Politico<\/strong>” today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In recent weeks, there has been a change in attitude within the European Commission (EC)<\/strong>, and a different approach toward Serbia is being supported,” Politico reports, citing an EC official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, as it adds, “Serbia is still theoretically a candidate for EU membership one day, despite a regression in strengthening democratic values.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politico states that this has been highlighted ahead of today’s discussion about Serbia in the European Parliament<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it says that European Commissioner Marta Kos<\/strong>, who has hardened her positions toward the Serbian government and underlined that “the EU has a problem with Belgrade,” is requesting that Serbian President Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107<\/strong> clearly present which side he is on, after his recent trip to China<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report emphasizes that Kos underlined that “Vu\u010di\u0107 has an understanding of democracy that is highly questionable” and said that “his government, on the contrary, must focus on restoring media freedom, building an independent judiciary, and stopping the violence carried out by the authorities.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
