Idit Alon, the mother of Alon Ohel (24), who is being held hostage in Gaza by the Palestinian militant group Hamas, said that her son’s smile in the video released by Hamas gave her hope and that his life is in the hands of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“His speech is a little slurred, but he seems to be doing well. To see him and to see that there is still something left of him, his smile\u2014at that moment, it gives so much hope. He is alive, and we must bring them home,” Idit Alon told the public broadcaster Kan, as reported by The Times of Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Idit Ohel said she told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that her son’s fate is his responsibility. “I spoke with the Prime Minister about Alon; our conversation will remain between us, but I made things clear to him, and he listened. Alon’s life is in the Prime Minister’s hands, under his personal responsibility. We trust him, but it is entirely his responsibility,” Idit Alon said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The family of Alon Ohel, who holds Israeli-Serbian dual citizenship, allowed the publication of a photo from the Hamas video, which was released a day earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The video, which also features hostage Guy Gilboa-Dalal, was the first time Ohel had been seen alive since he was taken hostage along with 250 other people during the Hamas attack on Israel in early October 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Netanyahu spoke with the families of both hostages after the video’s release, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ohel went to the “Supernova” rave, which was held in the desert, with several friends. He arrived at 5:30 a.m., an hour before the start of the Hamas attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ohel and his friends fled to a shelter, which was later attacked by terrorists. Many of those inside were killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His family said on Saturday that experts had told them the video shows Ohel has lost sight in his right eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February, the public broadcaster Kan reported that there were indications that Alon Ohel might lose his sight due to shrapnel injuries. This assessment was made based on the testimonies of freed hostages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
