The United States yesterday filed a request to revoke the citizenship of Slobodan Leti\u0107, because he concealed and misrepresented his involvement in the beating, torture and sexual abuse of civilians during the war in Bosnia in 1992, when he was an officer in the Bosnian Serb army, it was announced on the website of the US Department of Justice, writes Danas.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Leti\u0107 took two female prisoners from the camp, took them to an apartment where he beat and raped them. After the women were released from the camp, Leti\u0107 later met one of them on the street and again took her to an abandoned house, where he raped her. Also, Leti\u0107 broke into the homes of other civilians in Bosnia, to beat, torture and perform fake executions on them,” the statement on the website says, Danas reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is added that Leti\u0107, who also has Croatian citizenship, concealed his war crimes and acts of persecution during the immigration and naturalization process, after he entered the US in 2000 as a refugee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, the lawsuit alleges that Leti\u0107 concealed his criminal convictions in Bosnia for corruption while working as a police officer after the war. He received American citizenship on September 22, 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The United States is not a safe haven for war criminals and perpetrators of human rights violations,” said Assistant Attorney General Bret Shumate of the Department of Justice’s Civil Division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Leti\u0107 entered our country portraying himself as a victim of persecution, while in fact he committed horrible crimes as a persecutor of others. He took advantage of our refugee admission system and should not have been granted American citizenship. With this action, we want to correct that error and we are committed to preserving the integrity of the naturalization process from fraud and concealment of facts.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Immigration and Nationality Act, the citizenship of a naturalized US citizen can be revoked if naturalization was obtained illegally or by concealing material facts or by willful misrepresentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case was investigated by the Immigration Litigation Department of the Civil Sector, with the help of the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security’s Investigations Service, historian William Tomlyanovich and attach\u00e9 John Christopher from the Immigration and Customs Service, as well as the Government of Bosnia. The case is being handled by attorney Chris Lyerla, and supervised by Max Weintraub from the Immigration Litigation Department, it is stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
