The initiative includes four sites with preserved temperate zone ecosystems.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ministry of Environmental Protection has initiated the nomination process for four sites with ancient and untouched beech forests in Serbia for inscription on the World Heritage List of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal is to include our forests in the world natural heritage “Ancient and Untouched Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe,” which currently includes 93 sites in 18 European countries and will represent Serbia’s first natural property on the UNESCO World Heritage List.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The working group for the nomination, with the goal of declaring Serbia’s first natural world heritage property, consists of representatives from the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia and the Provincial Institute for Nature Conservation, as well as the Directorate of Forests of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, and the National Commission for Cooperation of the Republic of Serbia with UNESCO of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The four sites proposed for inscription on the UNESCO list are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beech forests in Serbia represent unique examples of preserved temperate zone ecosystems, and their inclusion on the UNESCO list confirms their exceptional significance and universal value for world natural heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
