He was born into a devout family of average wealth. He fell in love with the Lord in his youth, and after the death of his parents, he distributed all his property to the poor and the sick, and then became a monk. With only one leather garment on him, he left his native region and withdrew to a wild mountain where he began his ascetic life in a cave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There he suffered many attacks from demons and people, as well as from robbers and his relatives. He moved to the Rila mountain and settled in a hollow tree. He fed only on grass and beans that, by God&#8217;s will, began to grow nearby. For years he did not see a human face, and then, again by God&#8217;s will, he was discovered by shepherds who were looking for their lost sheep. Many heard of him and came to him seeking help in illnesses and troubles. The sick received health through the saint&#8217;s prayers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One man had an unclean spirit for several years, and when he saw that people were going to Jovan&#8217;s desert, he followed them. When he came a kilometer from the Rila desert, he fell to the ground and began to shout: &#8220;I can&#8217;t go any further, the fire is burning me.&#8221; His companions then tied him up and dragged him to the venerable one and asked him to heal him. He replied that it was not in his power and that only God could heal him. They constantly begged him for help, so he prayed to God for him, and he was suddenly healed. Now everyone glorified God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The news of the great hermit reached the Bulgarian Tsar Petar. Therefore, pray to Christ God for our souls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many believers, attracted by the virtuous life of the holy ascetic, settled near the hermit. A temple and a monastery were soon built there. Having reached a ripe old age, Saint Jovan peacefully passed away in the year 946, in the seventieth year of his life. After his death, he appeared to his disciples. His relics were first transferred to Sofia, then during the invasion of the Hungarians they were taken to Hungary, and during the time of Tsar Jovan Asen they were taken to Trnovo.
