A year and a half after the citizens of Slovenia overwhelmingly supported the legalization of euthanasia in a referendum, the parliament has adopted a law that allows for the termination of life when medical treatments do not help in the recovery or improvement of patients’ severe conditions.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this, Slovenia has become the fifth country in Europe, and the only one among the former Yugoslav republics, where patients whose “health condition is unbearable” have the right to end their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For euthanasia to be approved, all possibilities of medical treatment must first be exhausted, according to the adopted law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The right to euthanasia cannot be used in cases where the patient’s unbearable condition is a consequence of mental illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before Slovenia, such laws in Europe were passed by Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, and globally, euthanasia is also legalized in Canada and Colombia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
