Svetislav Pe\u0161i\u0107 touched upon numerous interesting topics, with the most important being the roster for the upcoming European Championship, as well as Serbia’s best player, Nikola Joki\u0107.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The head coach of the Serbian national basketball team, Svetislav Pe\u0161i\u0107, gave an extensive interview for Mozzart Sport in which he discussed numerous interesting topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To begin, he revealed that he considers all national teams candidates for a medal at the Eurobasket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Everyone is a threat! And we are a threat to someone, but many are also a threat to us. This is the Eurobasket, it will be a stronger competition compared to the Olympic Games and the last FIBA World Cup. Why? At the FIBA World Cup, a large number of national teams that will now play at the Eurobasket were not in Manila due to the well-known competition system. Basketball in Europe, after the NBA and American basketball, is the best in the world; it has the best players and national teams. At the FIBA World Cup, among the top three or four teams were the Germans, us, and the USA. In Paris, after the Americans, it was the French, us, and the Germans. I would say that eight to ten national teams are medal contenders.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He then spoke about the goals for the European Championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For us, those of us directly involved in basketball, meaning the players, myself, and the Federation, we cannot set goals; they are already known. We must find a way to achieve those goals. It will be a very complicated, difficult, and exceptionally high-quality competition. I wouldn’t get too carried away with predictions; we must first prepare well. Poor preparation is preparation for failure. I would like it to be good preparation, which is preparation for success. What I ask of myself and my colleagues, and above all the players, is to give our maximum performance, and everything that comes before us does not depend only on us.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He then praised his players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The best part of Serbian basketball are the players. They play for the national team with great enthusiasm\u2026 There isn’t much material gain; previously, the national team was a stepping stone, like in football today. You play the World Cup and then sign the biggest contracts. In basketball, it’s not like that. Whether you win or not, you are already in the NBA. What are the motives of today’s players to play for the national team? To train with the best that Serbia has, or some of the best. And, when the time comes, to compete against the best. This is primarily a sporting interest, to individually improve through competition and training, to be a better player. All the players who played in the FIBA World Cup and at the Olympic Games, they are among the best in their clubs, all of them have progressed. I would like that to happen after the Eurobasket as well, for us to achieve a good result and for everyone to improve.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After that, he also touched upon the roster and answered whom the nation can expect at the European Championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Imagine, someone appoints you as a coach and you bear the responsibility. That should be accepted as a privilege, because not everyone gets it. If someone has already given you that responsibility, you must also make decisions, not to satisfy the world and everyone around the national team, but to adhere to the criteria necessary to build a good team. I am not against the best playing, and I don’t say they shouldn’t play, but it’s equally hard to achieve a result if the players don’t connect. In our national team, for which I am responsible, I try to have players who complement each other best. There won’t be big changes; most likely, we will have approximately the same team as in Paris.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An unavoidable topic was Nikola Joki\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I realized he was the best when the whole world realized it (laughs). He is currently one of the best in the world; this is shown not only by statistics but also by his results. He is constantly improving, that’s the most important thing. Of course, if he continues to do that, his statistics will also be better, as will the team. What distinguishes Joki\u0107 from all the best players in the world is that he is the best team player. He makes every teammate better. Although he is not a point guard, he is someone around whom the entire game is built. When everything is summed up, he does it best.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pe\u0161i\u0107 also revealed that he followed the games of Serbian clubs in the EuroLeague.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That’s my job. Not only Serbian clubs, but also players, wherever they play. The EuroLeague was quite competitive; the competition is growing. Zvezda and Partizan got three-year licenses, that’s the most important thing, now it will be easier for them. They will strive to achieve the best possible results, but not at any cost. I assume that this license will enable both of them to invest a little more in continuity, to perhaps endure some younger players\u2026 Those are my expectations when it comes to Zvezda and Partizan. A very difficult season awaits them, with 20 clubs in the EuroLeague, many double rounds\u2026”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also spoke about the EuroLeague expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For me, it’s a surprise that the EuroLeague made that decision (about expansion); it is in any case against basketball. We don’t have the conditions for that. Why they made that decision is a question for them, and I assume they will change it very quickly. We cannot have such a competition system in Europe as the EuroLeague wants to create for next season. They made that decision a little too quickly.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, he also answered the question – whom he sees as his successor on the national team bench.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When the time comes, I will give President \u010covi\u0107 and the Federation a proposal for colleagues who could succeed what we have started. Who that will be is now also a question for me; I don’t even know. Not everything depends on me either,” concluded Svetislav Pe\u0161i\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
