The Special Court in The Hague has extended the detention<\/strong> of Hashim Thaci, one of the former leaders of the so-called KLA, for another two months<\/strong>. Thaci, along with other former KLA leaders Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi, and Jakup Krasniqi, is accused of war crimes.<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision was made on June 11 by the presiding judge, Reporteri reports. The prosecution stated that there is still a risk of Thaci fleeing<\/strong> because he is aware of the serious and confirmed charges against him. Furthermore, the prosecution noted that Thaci will soon have sensitive information regarding witnesses and evidence that will be presented by the victims’ defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prosecution emphasized that the fact that Thaci also faces an indictment for obstructing proceedings increases his motivation to flee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thaci has been in detention in The Hague since his arrest in November 2020. The trial of the former KLA leaders began on April 3, 2023, and prosecutors concluded their evidentiary proceedings on April 15 of this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The indictment charges the former KLA leaders with war crimes and crimes against humanity<\/strong> committed in illegal KLA detention facilities in Kosovo and Metohija and in Albania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
