The Rector of the University of Belgrade, Vladan \u0110oki\u0107, discussed the crisis of higher education in Serbia with the European Union (EU) Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva in Brussels today, the Rectorate announced.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his conversation with the European Commission’s Commissioner for Research and Innovation, the Rector pointed out the seriousness of the higher education crisis in Serbia, especially for the University of Belgrade, emphasizing financial pressures, threats of unfounded lawsuits, the elimination of scientific activity, and the degradation of the academic profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He presented the gravity of the situation for the academic community in Serbia and reiterated the importance of working together to preserve university autonomy, science, and public interest in education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0110oki\u0107 also spoke at the conference “Fostering Research and Education Synergies across Southeast Europe and the Western Balkans,” held at the Permanent Representation of Slovenia to the European Union in Brussels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was organized by the University of Ljubljana, the Rectors’ Forum of Southeast Europe and the Western Balkans, and the Slovenian Business and Research Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference gathered more than 70 representatives of the academic community and decision-makers in the field of education to jointly consider challenges and opportunities for improving cooperation between EU institutions and the Western Balkans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
