Vladimir Jovanovi\u0107, vice-president of the City Board of the People’s Movement of Serbia (NPS), is one of the citizens of Ni\u0161 who removed the banner with the inscription “Better \u0106aci than Nazi” from the Ni\u0161 Fortress. He told N1 that he could not allow a swastika to stand on the Stambol gate of the fortress, considering all that the people of Ni\u0161 have endured throughout history.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If we know how much this city suffered from the Nazis, we know what they did to the citizens of Ni\u0161, calling the citizens of Ni\u0161 Nazis \u2013 it’s really not right. Putting a swastika on the fortress, the citizens didn’t even understand it. Next to me was a citizen who commented on how the city allowed it. She thought the city allowed it,” Jovanovi\u0107 told N1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He emphasized that he had to react and remove the banner since there was no communal police present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I and a few other people took down that banner and liberated the fortress again. Such signs must not be placed on the Ni\u0161 Fortress. I don’t know where the banner is now, my will was to take it down, now I don’t know where it is,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it was noted that many citizens rushed to remove the banner, Jovanovi\u0107 says that Du\u0161an An\u0111elkovi\u0107 from Kreni-promeni, students, as well as citizens who were at the foot of the fortress and protested what they saw, were also there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The People’s Movement of Serbia says they assume the banner is the work of the Serbian Progressive Party or a movement founded by President Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
