“How much has food gotten more expensive,” “How much have chemicals gotten more expensive,” “How much has cosmetics gotten more expensive” – these are not questions, these are observations that are constantly heard. There is no doubt that inflation and margins have taken their toll. Although we are far from the hyperinflation of the nineties, every new entry into the store from week to week raises the suspicion that something has gotten more expensive again, because it seems that there is less and less in the basket, and the bill is getting higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the situation when you go abroad? Experiences vary, depending on the supermarket chain, city, country, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2021, according to Eurostat research, Serbia has the highest food prices in the region, with the explanation that prices of consumer goods and services in Serbia are at the level of 60 percent of the EU average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the latest Eurostat surveys from 2023 states that prices in Serbia are similar to those in the EU, but that wages are twice as low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our colleague was on vacation in Italy and we asked her to tell us how things stand on the “luxury shelves” in stores – primarily sweets, chemicals, and cosmetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to chocolates, especially popular brands, the situation is similar – in Italy, it is usually 1.99 euros, in Serbia, it ranges from 200 to 300 dinars for 100 grams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things become different when it comes to chemicals, especially fabric softeners. What is usually around 3 euros in Italy, is between 600 and 900 dinars in Serbia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cosmetics and hair products are also often twice as expensive in Serbia, so middle-low brands for hair care, primarily shampoos and conditioners, are usually around 3 euros, while in Serbia identical products are 500, 600 or 700 dinars, again depending on the supermarket chain and on which days of the week (whether there is a discount or promotion).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And finally, as an example, a package of vacuum-packed dried meat, such as pork loin or prosciutto, ranges from 2.5 euros to 4.25 in Italy, and from 500 to 900 dinars in Serbia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Italy, the average gross annual salary is around 27,000 euros, which is twelve percent less than the EU average and 23 percent less than the German average. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Employees under 1<\/sup> 34 years of age earn an average of about 16,000 euros \u2013 before taxes and insurance deductions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
