With a steady hand, Anke Hanu\u0161<\/strong> dips her stylus into dark blue wax and carefully draws intricate patterns onto a yellow-dyed Easter egg. Stroke by delicate stroke, a honeycomb motif begins to bloom across the shell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This elaborate design is destined to become a godparent\u2019s gift to their godchild<\/strong>, a gesture meant to pass down the values of diligence and strong work ethic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tradition of decorating Easter eggs is deeply rooted in the culture of the Lusatian Serbs<\/strong>, a Slavic-speaking minority in Germany, according to the Associated Press<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern-day Lusatian Serbs are descendants of Slavic tribes that settled in parts of central and eastern Europe, including what is now Germany, some 1,500 years ago<\/strong>. Today, about 60,000 Lusatian Serbs<\/strong> live in Germany, primarily spread across the federal states of Saxony and Brandenburg<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEaster is the biggest holiday of the year for Lusatian Serbs,\u201d says Stefanie Birhold<\/strong>, who works at the Lusatian Sorbian Cultural Center<\/strong> in Schleife<\/strong>, a town just 16 kilometers from the Polish border<\/strong>. \u201cThe best thing is that this tradition is still alive within families.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Birhold, Hanu\u0161, and dozens of community members gathered at the center on April 6<\/strong>, two weeks ahead of Easter, to celebrate their heritage<\/strong> through egg decorating, traditional folk costumes, songs, and dances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The art of decorating Lusatian Easter eggs<\/strong> dates back to the Middle Ages<\/strong>. At the cultural event, Hanu\u0161 wore a red traditional costume and a hat indicating she was unmarried<\/strong>\u2014married women wore green<\/strong>. She was one of more than 30 artisans<\/strong> selling their decorated eggs at the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prices ranged from \u20ac7 for a small, decorated chicken egg<\/strong>, to \u20ac90 for a painted emu egg<\/strong>. Depending on the complexity of the design, technique, and size of the egg, the process can take anywhere from 90 minutes to six hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Craftspeople use needles or the tips of goose feathers<\/strong>, specially cut for precision, to draw their intricate motifs. Despite global concerns over avian flu outbreaks<\/strong>, egg shortages<\/strong>, and rising prices<\/strong>, artisans say their craft remains unaffected\u2014though they prefer sourcing eggs directly from local farmers rather than supermarkets<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
