{"id":175167,"date":"2025-04-11T16:14:31","date_gmt":"2025-04-11T14:14:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/?p=175167"},"modified":"2025-04-11T16:14:31","modified_gmt":"2025-04-11T14:14:31","slug":"the-dark-side-of-serbian-media-history-26-years-since-the-murder-of-journalist-slavko-curuvija","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/the-dark-side-of-serbian-media-history-26-years-since-the-murder-of-journalist-slavko-curuvija\/","title":{"rendered":"THE DARK SIDE OF SERBIAN MEDIA HISTORY: 26 years since the murder of journalist Slavko \u0106uruvija"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today marks 26 years since the murder of journalist and owner of <em>Srpski telegraf<\/em> and <em>Evropljanin<\/em>, Slavko \u0106uruvija.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u0106uruvija was shot and killed on April 11, 1999, in the entryway of a building at 35 Svetogorska Street in Belgrade, following a media campaign against him led by the then-regime of Slobodan Milo\u0161evi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Journalists&#8217; Association of Serbia (UNS) and the Independent Journalists&#8217; Association of Serbia (NUNS) have called on citizens to support the &#8220;Slavko \u0106uruvija&#8221; Foundation today in front of the Second Basic Court in Belgrade, as it faces a lawsuit filed for defamation and damage to reputation by former suspects in \u0106uruvija\u2019s murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a statement, precisely on the date \u0106uruvija was murdered in 1999\u2014the editor and owner of the newspaper <em>Dnevni telegraf<\/em>\u2014a preliminary hearing will be held in the case against the Foundation, which has been sued for defamation by Milan Radonji\u0107, Miroslav Kurak, and Ratko Romi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three filed the lawsuit against the Foundation following its public reaction to a decision by the Court of Appeals to acquit them of charges in the \u0106uruvija murder case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They had previously been convicted twice for inciting an unidentified person (NN) to murder the Belgrade journalist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All three are seeking damages of 500,000 dinars each from the &#8220;Slavko \u0106uruvija&#8221; Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:#FFFFFF;color:#d21414\" class=\"has-inline-color\">FIND OUT MORE IN ENGLISH:<\/mark><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fserbiantimes%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02MFsvqgsG4zgUcQH9j1sYCzxNG5wmFy15RawpQWCG3rAMJcbNiMG9JEGEGCTjtypvl&#038;show_text=true&#038;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"250\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UNS and NUNS have called on citizens to gather on Friday, April 11, at 11:30 a.m. in front of the Second Basic Court in Kataniceva Street in Belgrade, when the trial is scheduled to begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afterward, representatives of the two associations plan to lay wreaths at the site where \u0106uruvija was murdered in 1999.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former members of the State Security Service\u2014Radonji\u0107, Kurak, and Romi\u0107\u2014were initially convicted in 2019 for inciting an unidentified person to commit the murder and sentenced to prison terms ranging from 20 to 30 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Court of Appeals overturned that ruling in September 2020, stating that the Special Court had \u201cexceeded the charges by introducing an unidentified perpetrator and altering the facts described in the indictment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the retrial, the Special Court in December 2021 again sentenced Radonji\u0107 to 30 years in prison, while Romi\u0107 and Kurak received 20 years each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In February last year, the Court of Appeals overturned that verdict and acquitted them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4o<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:#FFFFFF;color:#d21414\" class=\"has-inline-color\">MORE TOPICS:<\/mark><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/his-native-village-does-not-forget-a-mural-with-the-image-of-the-killed-policeman-nikola-krsmanovic-appeared-in-draginac-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">HIS NATIVE VILLAGE DOES NOT FORGET: A mural with the image of the killed policeman Nikola Krsmanovi\u0107 appeared in Draginac!
