Her childhood was forever cut short by bombs on April 17, 1999, as she was getting ready for bed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Milica Raki\u0107, a <strong>three-year-old girl from Batajnica<\/strong>, became the symbol of <strong>children\u2019s suffering in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia during the NATO aggression<\/strong>. Had her life not been taken by the bombs, she would have turned <strong>29 years old<\/strong> on April 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Little Milica <strong>died in her home<\/strong> in <strong>Batajnica<\/strong>. On the day of her death, she had drawn tulips and stuck them on the wall. That <strong>fatal April 17<\/strong>, at around <strong>9:00 PM<\/strong>, the air raid alarm sounded over <strong>Belgrade<\/strong>, signaling that NATO planes were once again arriving for their <strong>genocidal mission of killing and destruction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At <strong>9:45 PM<\/strong>, the building where the Raki\u0107 family lived was hit. At that moment, <strong>little Milica was in the bathroom, sitting on her potty<\/strong>, while her mother <strong>Du\u0161ica had stepped into the room to prepare Milica\u2019s bed for sleep<\/strong>. The bathroom door was open. <strong>A deafening explosion was heard, followed by the sound of shattering glass, bathroom tiles, and the building\u2019s facade.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Milica\u2019s father, <strong>\u017darko, ran to the bathroom and saw a horrifying scene<\/strong>. His child lay on the floor, and <strong>there was blood everywhere<\/strong>. Hoping she was still alive, he <strong>picked her up, rushed down the stairs, and drove her to the Zemun hospital<\/strong>. At <strong>midnight<\/strong>, doctors delivered the <strong>tragic news<\/strong> to \u017darko\u2019s brother-in-law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>monument to little Milica<\/strong> was erected in <strong>Ta\u0161majdan Park<\/strong> in <strong>Belgrade<\/strong>. The statue features <strong>Milica\u2019s bust<\/strong>, with a <strong>short yet heartbreaking inscription: &#8220;We were just children&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:#FFFFFF;color:#d21414\" class=\"has-inline-color\">FIND OUT MORE: <\/mark><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fserbiantimes%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0ReYiZtTSK1fZfxy3bMfCJkoSXuipMoc9DM7qSGWCvXfwRgFKVruXThuMGqw9z3nWl&#038;show_text=true&#038;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"250\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alongside <strong>Milica Raki\u0107, NATO killed 78 other children<\/strong> during the bombing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colonel <strong>Ljubinko \u0110urkovi\u0107<\/strong>, <strong>commander of the defense at Ko\u0161are<\/strong>, spoke to <strong>Kurir<\/strong> about the <strong>heroic battle of our soldiers<\/strong>, who fought tirelessly to <strong>protect the lives of the weak\u2014children, women, and the elderly\u2014while the aggressors relentlessly pursued the destruction of everything Serbian<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;The fact is that the soldiers of the Yugoslav Army fought to preserve peace. They believed that their struggle would stop the killing of innocent children across Serbia. We, who fought against the aggressors, managed to save some lives. Some of them had only just started breathing, knew nothing of sin, and yet they were murdered\u2014guilty of nothing. NATO showed no mercy in achieving its goal. These ruthless forces targeted our freedom, our sovereignty, and everything sacred to us.
