(PHOTO)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantinus Augustus, better known as <strong>Constantine the Great<\/strong>, was one of the greatest <strong>Roman emperors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He carried out a <strong>series of major reforms<\/strong> in administration and the military, strengthening the <strong>Roman Empire<\/strong>, which had been shaken by the <strong>great crisis of the 3rd century<\/strong>. As the <strong>first Roman ruler to embrace Christianity<\/strong>, which had previously been a persecuted minority faith, Constantine initiated the <strong>Christianization of the Empire<\/strong>, leading to the rise of Christianity as the <strong>dominant religion of the civilized world<\/strong> at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>beginning the Christianization of the Empire<\/strong> and <strong>founding Constantinople<\/strong>, Constantine laid the foundations for the <strong>future Byzantine Empire<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the <strong>first Christian emperor<\/strong>, a <strong>great benefactor<\/strong>, and <strong>patron of the Christian Church<\/strong>, Constantine was <strong>canonized after his death<\/strong>. In <strong>Orthodox churches<\/strong>, including the <strong>Serbian Orthodox Church<\/strong>, he is revered as a <strong>saint<\/strong> and the <strong>&#8220;Equal-to-the-Apostles Emperor&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Constantine was born <strong>between 271 and 273 AD<\/strong>, on <strong>February 27<\/strong>, in the <strong>Roman city of Naissus (modern-day Ni\u0161, Serbia)<\/strong>, located in the <strong>province of Moesia Superior<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his <strong>hometown of Naissus<\/strong>, Constantine <strong>lavishly developed a residence in Mediana<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On his way to the <strong>Eternal City<\/strong>, Constantine had a <strong>mystical experience<\/strong> that led him to openly embrace Christianity. According to <strong>Lactantius<\/strong>, whose work <em>On the Death of the Persecutors<\/em> was written around <strong>317\/318 AD<\/strong>, Constantine had a <strong>dream<\/strong> the night before the <strong>Battle of the Milvian Bridge<\/strong> in which he was instructed to <strong>mark his soldiers&#8217; shields<\/strong> with the letter <strong>H<\/strong>, featuring a <strong>vertical line curved at the top<\/strong> to form a <strong>Christogram<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <strong>Constantine&#8217;s biographer, Bishop Eusebius of Caesarea<\/strong>, who wrote the emperor\u2019s biography shortly after <strong>337 AD<\/strong>, the emperor personally and under oath recounted the entire event to him several years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Constantines_conversion-1024x767.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20796\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Piter Pol Rubens &#8211; Konstantinova vizija \/ Wikimedia Creative Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>Eusebius&#8217; account<\/strong> in <em>Vita Constantini<\/em>, Constantine prayed to the <strong>God his father had worshipped<\/strong>, and the following day, <strong>he and his army saw a radiant cross above the sun<\/strong>, bearing the inscription <strong>&#8220;In this sign, conquer&#8221; (\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf \u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uncertain of the vision\u2019s meaning, Constantine was visited in a <strong>dream by Christ<\/strong>, who advised him to create a <strong>military standard in the shape of the symbol he had seen in the sky<\/strong> and use it in battle. The next day, Constantine ordered the <strong>creation of the military standard (labarum)<\/strong>, featuring a <strong>wreath at the top<\/strong> containing the <strong>Greek letters H and R intertwined as Christ\u2019s monogram<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/the-arc-de-triomphe-2389937_1280-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20800\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Konstantinova trijumfalna kapija pored Koloseuma u Rimu \/ Pixabay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After this event, Constantine decided to <strong>follow the God who had appeared to him<\/strong> and gathered <strong>Christian priests<\/strong>, asking them to <strong>introduce him to the Christian faith<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Italy, Constantine proclaimed <strong>Galerius&#8217; Edict of Toleration of 311 AD<\/strong>, later ordering that <strong>confiscated Church property be returned<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He sought to convince his <strong>ally Licinius<\/strong> of the legitimacy of his <strong>religious policies<\/strong>, and in <strong>February 313<\/strong>, they met in <strong>Milan<\/strong>, where Licinius married Constantine\u2019s <strong>half-sister, Constantia<\/strong>.
