One of them was <strong>Du\u0161an I. \u0110onovi\u0107<\/strong>\u2014the first Serbian casualty of World War I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On that same day, <strong>July 28, 1914<\/strong>, according to the new calendar, Austria-Hungary sent a telegram informing Serbia that they were now in a state of war. The attack on Belgrade immediately followed. Due to the sudden and brutal way in which war was declared, many at first did not believe that conflict was imminent. But the night between July 28 and 29 shattered all illusions\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, the <strong>Sava and Danube Rivers<\/strong> marked the state border, making Serbia\u2019s capital a frontline outpost. This is why the <strong>first shots of the Great War<\/strong> were fired precisely in <strong>Savamala<\/strong>, in what is today Bra\u0107e Krsmanovi\u0107 Street. The <strong>first blood of the greatest conflict Europe had seen up to that point was spilled on the streets of Belgrade.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/\u0414\u0443\u0448\u0430\u043d_\u0402\u043e\u043d\u043e\u0432\u0438\u045b-779x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18289\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A City Left to Defend Itself<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>It may seem unbelievable, but on that first day of the war, <strong>there was no defense plan!<\/strong> The army had largely retreated south, leaving Belgrade <strong>completely unprotected.<\/strong> Due to the city\u2019s precarious location, some even suggested surrendering it without a fight\u2014but the people of Belgrade would not allow it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the forces present in Belgrade that fateful night, <strong>a makeshift defense was assembled.<\/strong> The first to engage the enemy on the banks of the Sava were troops made up of gendarmes, customs officers, local citizens, and even children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of them was <strong>Du\u0161an I. \u0110onovi\u0107<\/strong>, a <strong>16-year-old<\/strong> student in his second year at the <strong>Royal Academy of Commerce.<\/strong> Armed with a rifle, he joined the <strong>Chetniks of Vojvoda Jovan Babunski<\/strong>, and he would become <strong>the first Serbian victim of World War I.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Du\u0161an was killed in the <strong>gunfire that erupted after the defenders destroyed the old railway bridge over the Sava<\/strong>, which was the only connection between <strong>Belgrade and Zemun<\/strong> at the time. It was not until <strong>2004<\/strong>, during the commemoration of the <strong>90th anniversary of World War I<\/strong>, that a <strong>memorial plaque<\/strong> was placed in his honor at the <strong>First Economics School in Belgrade<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An Obituary as Proof He Existed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Du\u0161an I. \u0110onovi\u0107 was neither a hero nor a famous figure.<\/strong> History did not record his appearance, so today we do not even know what he looked like. That he once lived, studied, and had dreams and hopes is only known to us thanks to an obituary published in <strong>Politika<\/strong> on <strong>August 4, 1914<\/strong>, in its first edition after six days of bombing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That night, after Du\u0161an and Istv\u00e1n, <strong>around 1,000 soldiers and civilians perished.<\/strong> Over the next <strong>four years<\/strong>, across <strong>Europe<\/strong>, <strong>37 million more<\/strong> would die in a conflict so <strong>bloody and horrific<\/strong> that it was only overshadowed by <strong>World War II.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for Serbia, it lost over <strong>1,200,000 soldiers and civilians<\/strong>, nearly <strong>a third of its population<\/strong>\u2014an entire <strong>generation<\/strong> whose loss the country <strong>never fully recovered from.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cDu\u0161an \u0110onovi\u0107<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Prva \u017ertva u na\u0161em velikom ratu \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ve\u010deras, oko pono\u0107i, navr\u0161i\u0107e se osam dana kako su prvi austrijski meci nadrli na na\u0161u zemlju i od kako je po\u010deo veliki rat za slobodu i nezavisnost Srpskog Naroda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U toj znamenitoj no\u0107i kao prva \u017ertva pao je mladi dobrovoljac Du\u0161an \u0110onovi\u0107, \u010dinovnik \u017delezni\u010dke direkcije i \u010detnik u \u010deti vojvode Jovana Babunskog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Du\u0161an \u0110onovi\u0107, primorac po ro\u0111enju, brat Jovana \u0110onovi\u0107a, koji se istakao u crnogorskom omladinskom pokretu. \u010cim je Austrija nagovestila rat, Du\u0161an \u0110onovi\u0107 je prihvatio pu\u0161ku i stupio u dobrovoljce.
