{"id":165989,"date":"2025-02-20T17:07:01","date_gmt":"2025-02-20T15:07:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/?p=165989"},"modified":"2025-02-20T17:07:02","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T15:07:02","slug":"tragicna-prica-o-velikom-duri-jaksicu-pretucen-je-do-smrti-a-njegov-ubica-danas-ima-ulicu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/tragicna-prica-o-velikom-duri-jaksicu-pretucen-je-do-smrti-a-njegov-ubica-danas-ima-ulicu\/","title":{"rendered":"THE TRAGIC STORY OF GREAT \u0110URA JAK\u0160I\u0106: Beaten to death, and his killer has a street named after him today!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u0110ura Jak\u0161i\u0107 was arguably the greatest lyric poet of Serbian Romanticism and one of the most talented Serbian painters of the 19th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to poetry, which is the most valuable part of his literary work, he also wrote short stories and heroic poems (<em>Na Liparu<\/em>, <em>Pono\u0107<\/em>, <em>Padajte bra\u0107o<\/em>, <em>Otad\u017ebina<\/em>, <em>Seoba Srbalja<\/em>, <em>Stanoje Glava\u0161<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jak\u0161i\u0107, a poet, storyteller, playwright, and painter, was born in Banat, in Srpska Crnja, into a priestly family. His real name was Georgije. He studied painting in Pest and Vienna, lived for a while in Vojvodina, and at the age of twenty-five moved to Belgrade, where he remained until his death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He worked as a village teacher in Podgorac, Sumrakovac, Sabanta, Ra\u010da near Kragujevac, and Po\u017earevac, and as a drawing teacher in high schools in Kragujevac, Belgrade, and Jagodina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite having a family, his life was marked by bohemianism. The tavern world was his natural environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Already suffering from tuberculosis, he participated in the First Serbian-Turkish War as a correspondent, where he witnessed the disgraceful behavior of elite general and prince&#8217;s relative, Ranko Alimpi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two years later, he published a satirical story about it in a Novi Sad magazine, which led to his trial in Serbia before a military court. He was sentenced to fifteen days in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth about this case became known in Serbia only after the Obrenovi\u0107 dynasty lost power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1906, \u017darko Ili\u0107, the youngest brother of poet Vojislav Ili\u0107, published:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;In the summer of 1878, in front of the Paris Hotel in Belgrade, several officers were sitting at a table, among them General Ranko Alimpi\u0107. At that moment, \u0110ura Jak\u0161i\u0107 passed by and continued down Batal Mosque Street. On the way, he met a peasant\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The peasant was driving a few oxen. \u0110ura stopped him and asked, \u2018Are you heading down to Terazije?\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The peasant replied that he was.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Then \u0110ura took a dinar from his pocket, handed it to the peasant, and said, \u2018When you pass by the Paris tavern, drive the oxen closer to those gentlemen sitting there, strike one of the oxen with your stick, and say: \u201cWhy are you hesitating like Ranko Alimpi\u0107 on the Drina?\u201d\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The peasant did as he was told. When he uttered those words, all the officers looked at each other. One of them immediately got up from the table and slowly followed the peasant to the nearest gendarmerie post\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>At the police station, they questioned the peasant about whether he had said those words on his own or if someone had told him to. One evening, as he was returning home from a lively gathering, he was ambushed in the nearly deserted street by two night guards disguised in civilian clothes. They seized him, knocked him down, and beat and trampled him so badly that the poor man barely made it home\u2026 From that moment on, \u0110ura\u2019s health began to deteriorate.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u0110ura Jak\u0161i\u0107 passed away on November 17, 1878.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four writers carried his coffin out of his poverty-stricken room in Skadarska Street: Jovan Jovanovi\u0107 Zmaj, Jovan Draga\u0161evi\u0107, Milan Kujund\u017ei\u0107, and Milorad Popovi\u0107 \u0160ap\u010danin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;There were high-ranking statesmen, large and small officials, professors and scholars, soldiers, students, merchants, craftsmen, and poor workers\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to newspaper reports, out of the 25,000 residents of Belgrade at the time, nearly half came to pay their final respects to the great poet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His sentence was never served.
