(VIDEO)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Lusatian Serbs are the smallest Slavic ethnic group, residing in eastern Germany, in the federal states of Saxony and Brandenburg, in a region historically known as Lusatia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This area, located southeast of Berlin near the Polish and Czech borders, is divided into Upper and Lower Lusatia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, they are primarily concentrated in the valley of the Spree River, although they once occupied a much larger territory. Some Lusatian Serbs also live in enclaves in eastern Germany outside this region. One such enclave is the Spreewald\u2014known as <em>Blota<\/em> in Lusatian Serbian (meaning &#8220;swamp&#8221; in Serbian)\u2014which lies slightly north of Lusatia, in the direction of Berlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cultural center of Upper Lusatia is Bautzen (historically part of Saxony, where conditions for their survival were more favorable), while the center of Lower Lusatia is the town of Cottbus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is difficult to determine precisely when they settled around the Oder River, but they were certainly there by the year 500 AD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some historians claim that the Lusatian Serbs are the distant ancestors of the Serbs, while others argue that they are merely a German national minority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u0420\u0430\u0458\u043d\u0430 \u041b\u0443\u0436\u0438\u0446\u0430 - \u041d\u0430\u0446\u0438\u043e\u043d\u0430\u043b\u043d\u0430 \u0445\u0438\u043c\u043d\u0430 \u041b\u0443\u0436\u0438\u0447\u043a\u0438\u0445 \u0421\u0440\u0431\u0430\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ECmjhJfvCAE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most significant pieces of evidence supporting their Serbian roots is their continued celebration of Easter and St. George\u2019s Day in the Serbian Orthodox tradition. This historical fact is documented in the <strong>Serbskij Museum<\/strong>, located in a Baroque palace in Cottbus, about a hundred kilometers south of Berlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As members of the larger group of Polabian Slavs, who arrived from the territories of the Russian Empire and inhabited vast areas of eastern Germany\u2014from the Elbe River to the Oder and Vistula in Poland\u2014the Lusatian Serbs were divided into numerous Slavic tribes, including the Bodrichi, Ljutichi, Luzhane, Milceni, Pomorani, Glomaci-Daleminci, Rujani, Suselci, and Neletici.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:#FFFFFF;color:#d21414\" class=\"has-inline-color\">FIND OUT MORE IN ENGLISH:<\/mark><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fserbiantimes%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02D7Wv4PnFd1m6KD7xehq7kbGWdev7aGSMmgiwyZe7a59FeLCYXEJUUacLK743bJ1ul&#038;show_text=true&#038;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"674\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>Even today, <strong>ninety percent of the geographical names of rivers, fields, lakes, and settlements<\/strong> in the German regions of Mecklenburg, Saxony, Brandenburg, Pomerania, and others bear Serbian names (e.g., Kamenica, Bela Gora, Bela Voda, Ratibor, Dubravka, Rogozno, Strela, Drenovo, Trnovo, etc.). Though there are no longer Serbs in most of these areas\u2014except in Lusatia\u2014they are still officially recognized as &#8220;Northern Serbs,&#8221; or &#8220;Serbs in Germany and near Berlin.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the local people around Berlin, there are still legends about the <strong>Sorben<\/strong> and their rulers, referring to Serbian leaders, cities, temples, and frequent wars. These traditions are also preserved by the assimilated Serbian population. The Lusatian Serbs refer to themselves as <strong>Serbja, Serb, Serbonjka<\/strong>, while they call the Serbs from the Balkans <strong>&#8220;Southern Serbs&#8221; (Ju\u017eni Serbja).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They speak <strong>two closely related languages<\/strong>: Upper Lusatian Serbian (influenced by Czech) and Lower Lusatian Serbian (influenced by Polish).
