However, thanks to <strong>German creators such as Jacob Grimm and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe<\/strong>, the <strong>Serbian people finally began to attract the attention of the West<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a long time, the <strong>Balkans were not considered an important topic in Western intellectual circles<\/strong>, and <strong>very little was known about Slavic nations under Ottoman rule<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only with the <strong>rise of Romanticism<\/strong>, a <strong>literary and artistic movement<\/strong> emerging from the <strong>new ideals shaping the spirit of the time in Europe in the late 18th century<\/strong>, did <strong>Serbian folk literature and culture gain significance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Romanticist ideas celebrated the <strong>national state, language, culture, history, and struggles for national liberation<\/strong>. Romanticism, as an artistic movement, <strong>embraced ancient, &#8216;primitive&#8217; poetry<\/strong> that arose as a <strong>natural expression of the human spirit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to these ideals and to <strong>great German intellectuals such as Jacob Grimm and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe<\/strong>, the <strong>Serbian people finally began to capture Western interest<\/strong>, prompting the question: <strong>&#8220;Who are the Serbs, and what is their culture?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Serbian <strong>oral epic poetry<\/strong> provided <strong>Europeans with insight into the lives of Serbs<\/strong>, their customs and history, <strong>what they fought for, and how they understood honor, love, and freedom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Jacob_Grimm-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26947\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Johan Volfgang fon Gete i Jakob Grim \/ Wikimedia Creative Commons<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Guslar_singing_of_the_death_of_Lazar_at_an_encampent_in_Javor-1024x637.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26946\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Srbi uz gusle \/ Wikimedia Creative Commons<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>educational mission of Vuk Stefanovi\u0107 Karad\u017ei\u0107<\/strong>, who <strong>recorded poetry as he heard it from folk singers and guslars<\/strong>, allowed <strong>Jacob Grimm to develop an affinity for Serbian culture<\/strong>, which he enthusiastically studied and introduced to the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was through <strong>Grimm<\/strong>, who <strong>learned Serbian in the process<\/strong>, that <strong>Serbian folk songs reached Johann Wolfgang von Goethe<\/strong>, one of the <strong>greatest and most respected artists of his time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Goethe was so impressed by <strong>Serbian folk poetry<\/strong> that he <strong>compared its beauty to the biblical Song of Songs<\/strong>. The <strong>German artist particularly admired &#8220;Hasanaginica,&#8221;<\/strong> which he <strong>translated into German along with other Serbian folk songs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/AleksandrPushkin.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26944\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Vasilij Tropinin &#8211; Aleksandar Sergejevi\u010d Pu\u0161kin \/ Wikimedia Creative Commons<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond <strong>German Romantics<\/strong>, Serbian folk poetry also gained prominence through the works of <strong>Alexander Pushkin, Therese Albertine Luise von Jakob-Robinson (Talvj), Johann Gottfried Herder, Claude Fauriel, and Adam Mickiewicz<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Epic poems emerged as a <strong>result of collective folk creativity<\/strong>, passed down <strong>from generation to generation<\/strong>, glorifying <strong>important events, great battles, and heroic deeds<\/strong>. They were also called <strong>&#8220;men\u2019s songs&#8221;<\/strong> because their <strong>main themes often revolved around bravery, heroism, and a glorious past<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dominant verse was <strong>the epic decasyllable<\/strong>, and the narratives were <strong>dynamic, without unnecessary lyrical details<\/strong>. <strong>Epic songs were traditionally sung to the accompaniment of the gusle<\/strong>, and folk singers often <strong>added their personal touch to the original structure without altering its essence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Considering that these poems were passed down <strong>orally<\/strong>, <strong>guslars were the most important guardians and interpreters of this cultural heritage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to singers such as <strong>Filip Vi\u0161nji\u0107, Te\u0161an Podrugovi\u0107, and Starac Milija<\/strong>, <strong>Serbs today learn through artistic expression about national heroes<\/strong> such as <strong>Prince Lazar, Kraljevi\u0107 Marko, Milo\u0161 Obili\u0107, Emperor Du\u0161an, and other historical or semi-mythical figures<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>verbal creativity of the Serbian people<\/strong> led to the development of not only <strong>epic folk songs<\/strong> but also <strong>lyric folk songs, stories, fairy tales, riddles, ballads, and legends<\/strong>.
