U.S. President Donald Trump<\/strong> stated that \u201chearts are broken\u201d<\/strong> following this morning\u2019s collision between a plane and a military helicopter in Washington<\/strong>, adding that the United States is in mourning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the night, an American Airlines<\/strong> plane attempting to land collided with a military helicopter<\/strong>, and both aircraft plunged into the Potomac River<\/strong> in Washington. Officials do not believe that anyone survived among the 64 passengers on the plane and the three soldiers in the helicopter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a press conference addressing the crash, Trump said that the investigation had just begun but that he had a \u201cstrong opinion\u201d on the cause<\/strong>, according to the BBC<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump has previously criticized the hiring of what he claimed were unqualified air traffic controllers<\/strong>, though he has never provided concrete examples, and there is currently no evidence<\/strong> that this was the case in this incident, the BBC reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President questioned the actions of the military helicopter pilot and the air traffic controller<\/strong> leading up to the collision and then shifted the discussion to politics, blaming the recently ousted Democrats and their diversity initiatives<\/strong> related to gender, race, nationality, age, sexual orientation or identity, education, disability, and religious beliefs<\/strong> in employment, reports AP<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump claimed that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was \u201cactively recruiting\u201d individuals with \u201csevere intellectual disabilities, psychiatric problems, and other mental and psychological conditions\u201d<\/strong> as part of its diversity and inclusion policies<\/strong>, which he said are listed on the agency\u2019s website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stated that air traffic controllers “should be talented geniuses”<\/strong> and that “ordinary people cannot do this job.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump admitted that he had no evidence<\/strong> to support his claims that diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives or hiring preferences played a role<\/strong> in today\u2019s crash but insisted that \u201cit could have happened.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plane crash marks the first major disaster<\/strong> during Trump\u2019s new term<\/strong>, and his response mirrors<\/strong> his controversial statements<\/strong> made during the COVID-19 pandemic<\/strong>, AP notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
