Kennedy Jr., nephew of former President John F. Kennedy, who suspended his campaign in late August and endorsed Trump.

What do Democrats and Republicans stand for?

Democrats are a liberal political party whose agenda is defined primarily by their commitment to civil rights, a broad social safety net, and measures to address climate change.

Republicans are a conservative political party in the US. Also known as the GOP, or Grand Old Party, it advocates for lower taxes, reducing the size of government, less government interference in the lives of ordinary citizens, gun rights, and stricter limits on illegal immigration and abortion.

How do presidential elections work in the US?

The winner is not the person who gets the most votes nationwide. Instead, both candidates compete to win contests held in all 50 states.

Each state has a certain number of Electoral College votes, based in part on the number of residents. There are a total of 538 electors, and the winner is the candidate who wins 270 or more.

Wikimedia Commons

All but two states (Maine and Nebraska) have a rule that the winner takes all votes, so whichever candidate wins the most votes gets all of that state’s Electoral College votes.
Most states lean heavily towards one side or the other, so the focus is usually on a dozen or so states where either candidate could win. These are known as swing states.

It is possible for a candidate to win the most votes nationally – as Hillary Clinton did in 2016 – but still lose to the Electoral College.

Americans stick to this voting system because it ensures that the problems of all states must be in focus. Democrats are in charge of the Senate, which votes on key government appointments.

These two houses pass laws and can act as a check on the White House’s plans.
When will we know who won the election?

The winner is usually declared on election night, but in 2020 it took several days to count all the votes.

The period after the election is known as the transition, if there is a change of president.

This gives the new administration time to appoint cabinet ministers and make plans for the new term.

The president is officially sworn in in January at a ceremony known as the inauguration, which takes place on the steps of the Capitol building in Washington, D.C.

READ MORE:

TERRIBLE ACCIDENT IN NOVI SAD: The roof of the Railway Station collapsed, and all emergency services are on the scene!
