He studied theology, with Ayatollah Muhammad Hussein Fadlallah as his teacher. He graduated in chemistry from the Lebanese University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kasem was one of the founders of the Lebanese Muslim Student Union, established in the 1970s, according to Danas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He joined the Amal movement when it was led by Musa al-Sadr. Kasem headed Islamic religious education from 1974 to 1988.
