Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado said today that she presented U.S. President Donald Trump with the Nobel Peace Prize that she received in 2025 for her fight for democracy in Venezuela.
“I presented the President of the United States with the medal, the Nobel Peace Prize,” Machado said after a meeting with the American leader at the White House, CNN reports.
She said that she told Trump an anecdote about the Latin American revolutionary Simón Bolívar.
“Two hundred years ago, General (Marquis de) Lafayette gave Simón Bolívar a medal bearing the image of George Washington. Bolívar kept that medal until the end of his life. Two hundred years later, the people of Bolívar return a medal to the heir of Washington — in this case, the Nobel Peace Prize medal — as recognition of his unique dedication to our freedom,” Machado emphasized.

She stated that the conversation with Trump was “excellent” and that it went “very well.”
After leaving the residence of the U.S. president, Machado approached those gathered in front of the White House who were waving Venezuelan flags.
Last week, Machado said that she would like to award the prize to the American president.
Trump then said that he would discuss Machado’s offer “when she visits the United States next week.”
He added that it would be an “honor” for him to accept the award.
Trump had previously criticized the Nobel Committee for bypassing him and awarding the prize to Machado.
