Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, stated today that negotiations regarding the Petroleum Industry of Serbia (NIS) are progressing well and that the Russian owner and MOL have reached an agreement.

“There are ongoing consultations with the U.S. government so that ultimately the Serbian and Hungarian sector ministries can give their approval for this transaction,” Szijjártó said after talks with Serbia’s Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Đedović Handanović.

Szijjártó added that Ukraine is politically blackmailing Hungary and Slovakia regarding oil supplies and, in practice, is not supplying them.

“They are pressuring us to give them money and weapons, and we will not give them either,” he said.

He emphasized that landlocked countries such as Hungary, Slovakia, and Serbia are particularly vulnerable to blackmail when it comes to energy supply.

“To respond to blackmail from Kyiv and Brussels, the best solution is for MOL to acquire NIS. Then, these three landlocked countries will be able to work together, and we will be more resilient to challenges and blackmail like those we have seen recently,” he stressed.

According to Szijjártó, by the end of the year Serbia and Hungary will be connected by an oil pipeline, and it has been agreed to build an additional pipeline, which will ensure protection against situations like Kyiv’s blackmail.

“These difficult situations show who can rely on whom. When the Serbs were in a difficult position, MOL more than doubled exports, and now NIS has indicated that in the coming days it is ready to export additional quantities to Hungary to help us when Ukraine is trying to blackmail us,” Szijjártó said.

He added that Serbia and Hungary are jointly refuting Ukraine’s goal to push Hungary into an energy crisis and that the two countries can rely on each other in times of difficulty.
