Spanish, multi-award-winning, video journalist and documentary film director Raul Gallego Abellan, filmed a documentary about the student protest in Serbia, and this documentary, since yesterday, can be watched on YouTube.
On his Instagram profile, Abellan wrote a few days ago, along with a video announcement of the film: “While most Western youth walk between apathy and the right, Serbian youth have risen – fighting for democracy and human rights,” writes Moj Novi Sad.
He stated that it is the longest and largest student strike in modern European history and asked “can a peaceful revolution still triumph in the 21st century?”.
He also asks questions about why this struggle was kept in the shadow of global news, as well as what role lithium and international politics play in all of this?
According to his website, Raul Gallego Abellan has dedicated his career to filming and thoroughly researching current events and people who are not sufficiently reported on. With his unique approach, he spreads stories that are often not heard, but are of global importance. Such a choice of topics often leads him to war zones, places of natural disasters, centers of social unrest, and to inspiring personal stories.
After filming crisis situations in locations such as Afghanistan, Burma, Thailand and China, Raul decided to draw the world’s attention to the current student protest against corruption and political repression in Serbia.
Three young women from Novi Sad, students of the Academy of Arts in our city and FDU in Belgrade, also participated in the filming of the film, and those who follow the current events after the collapse of the awning on November 1, 2024, will surely see many familiar faces. Among others, the film also features the student Relja Stanojević who was arrested at the first major protest after the awning collapsed.
The entire film, which was published yesterday under the full title: “Wake up, Serbia! Pumpaj: The Student Uprising | Point of No Return” you can watch below:
As a journalist, Raul has collaborated with leading media organizations, including TVE, TV3, The Associated Press Television News and Channel 4 News UK. As an independent journalist, his contributions have appeared in media such as The Washington Post, The Intercept and South China Morning Post.

His recent feature-length documentary works include the film “Cockroach,” which covers the 2019 Hong Kong protests, where he was the director of photography, producer, cameraman and co-editor. Directed by the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, the film received significant recognition.
