In Mohovo, a settlement within the city of Ilok in Croatia, residents have been organizing Advent and celebrating both Orthodox and Catholic Christmas for many years. They strive, they say, to maintain unity among citizens of different nationalities and faiths.
This was also the case yesterday, during preparations for Orthodox Christmas. The villagers went to collect the Badnjak (a Yule log), which they then carried through the village and brought to the church, where it was lit in the evening. One of the villagers revealed on Facebook that they had a special guest in the village – a Catholic priest.

“On this Badnji dan, which I would like to take this opportunity to wish to my friends and family, a special situation stood out! As every year in the village, we traditionally go for a Yule log, which we carry through the village and bring to the church, where we light it in the evening. As we passed through the village, people welcomed us and treated us to various delicacies. And at one of the stops, a special guest joined us who wished us well, happiness, and health for Badnji dan and the Christmas holidays. This wouldn’t be strange for us normal people, but there are many others around us who still see everything differently and look for ways to humiliate us and stop us from doing good,” he wrote, and his post was shared by Index.hr.
“Thank God, whom we celebrate today, for giving us such people, who through their examples spread love, kindness, and friendship! It’s not just a Catholic priest who came with good wishes and joined us in the traditional gathering for Orthodox Badnji dan, but a person who is sent to spread something more, to unite people and bring peace to us all,” he emphasized, sharing a photo along with a Christmas greeting.
