After being spotted roaming a golf course near Chicago, an exotic wild caracal cat, native to parts of Asia and Africa, was found hiding under a balcony of an apartment in the Chicago neighborhood of Hoffman Estates, local police reported.

The local police department said that over the past few days they had been informed about a “big cat in the area of ​​Dela and Hill Dale golf course” and confirmed that the cat was identified as a caracal, a species characterized by a striking appearance with long legs, a short tail, long ears with tufts, and large canines, ABC News reported.

“After several days, specialized police services managed to locate and capture the caracal”, the Hoffman Estates Police Department statement said.

It is not known where this animal came from, to whom it belonged, or how it escaped, but caracals are an internationally protected endangered species and authorities are working with local and federal agencies to care for this specimen.

“The goal of the Hoffman Estates Police Department is to safely relocate the animal to a zoo or wildlife center that can properly care for it”, said a local government representative.
