The Financial Times announced that the US has informed European countries it is withdrawing from joint activities in the fight against disinformation coming from Russia, China, and Iran.
In a text reported by Ukraine’s Pravda, it is stated that European countries received a notification last week from the State Department, which says the US is ending the application of memorandums of understanding signed in 2024 during the time of former US President Joe Biden, who recently had surgery to remove cancerous cells from his skin.
These agreements were aimed at creating a unified approach to identifying and exposing harmful information coming from Moscow, Beijing, and Tehran.
The memorandums were part of an initiative led by the Global Engagement Center (GEC), a State Department agency in charge of combating disinformation spread by US adversaries and terrorist organizations abroad.
James Rubin, who headed that center until last December, described the move by President Donald Trump’s new administration as a “unilateral act of disarmament” in the information war against Russia and China.
“Information warfare is the reality of our time, and artificial intelligence will only multiply the risks from it,” Rubin assessed.
He told the FT that 22 countries in Europe and Africa signed agreements with the US during the past year.
This was part of the Biden administration’s program to counter manipulation coming from foreign states, and its goal was to build a common understanding of these threats and cooperate with partner countries on a coordinated response.
