President of the United States Donald Trump accused radical leftists of the incident in Minneapolis, in which an agent of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) killed a woman.
“I have just watched the footage of the event that took place in Minneapolis, in the state of Minnesota. It is terrible to watch. The woman who was screaming is, obviously, a professional agitator, while the woman who was driving the car was extremely agitated, obstructed the officers’ work and resisted, and then violently, deliberately and brutally ran over an ICE officer. He then, it appears, fired in self-defense. Based on the available footage, it is hard to believe that the officer survived, but he is currently recovering in the hospital,” Trump said, adding:
“The situation is being examined in detail, but the reason incidents like this happen is that radical left-wing groups threaten, attack and target law enforcement officers and ICE agents on a daily basis. They are just trying to do their jobs and make America safe,” Trump stated.
“We must stand by our law enforcement officers and protect them from this radical left movement of violence and hatred.”
As a reminder, in Minneapolis an ICE agent shot and killed a woman who ran over an officer with her vehicle.
The incident sparked protests near the scene, where demonstrators were met by armed federal agents.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security stated that the ICE officer fired in self-defense.
The mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, accused the Donald Trump administration of further escalating tensions, calling for the immediate withdrawal of federal agents and expressing solidarity with immigrant and refugee communities.
The incident occurred as part of Trump’s national action of intensified immigration enforcement, which has sparked widespread criticism and resistance from part of the population.
