The newly-elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, promised during his campaign that students who graduate from colleges in the U.S. should automatically receive a green card to stay in the country.
Donald Trump made this statement while appearing on the All-In podcast, hosted by Silicon Valley investors, to the delight of many international students in the U.S.
Investor Jason Calacanis told Trump that the U.S. needs to legally retain more highly skilled workers, as this is crucial for the development of the tech industry.
“Can you promise us that you will allow us to import the best and brightest people from all over the world to America?” Calacanis asked.

“I promise,” Trump replied, adding, “I actually agree, otherwise I wouldn’t have promised it… When you graduate from college, I think you should automatically, as part of your degree, get a green card so you can stay in this country, and that includes junior colleges as well.”
A green card, also known as a permanent resident card, allows individuals the right to live and work permanently in the United States and is a step toward citizenship.
In response to a request for comment, Trump’s campaign clarified that “only after the most rigorous vetting process in U.S. history, the most qualified graduates who can significantly contribute to America would be allowed to remain in the country.”
