At least 13 people were killed and 98 injured after a train derailed in Mexico. There were 250 people on board the train.
The derailment occurred on the main railway line between Veracruz and Salina Cruz.
According to a statement from the Mexican Navy, 36 people were hospitalized, while the others sustained minor injuries.
Hundreds of rescuers were sent to the scene, the statement added.

The train, traveling between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean, was carrying 241 passengers and nine crew members.

An investigation will be launched to determine the cause of the derailment, said Mexican state prosecutor Ernestina Godoy.
Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum instructed the secretary of the Mexican Navy and the undersecretary of the Ministry of the Interior for human rights “to travel to the scene and personally take care of the families.”
The Interoceanic train, operated by the Mexican Navy, connects Mexico’s Pacific and Gulf coasts. Its main line was put into operation in 2023 as part of a new program by then Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to encourage economic development in southern Mexico and create an alternative to the Panama Canal.
