The Serbian Orthodox Church today celebrates the Holy Chains, the day when King Herod chained the Holy Apostle Peter. Christians later kept the chains in which Saint Peter was bound for years, believing them to be miraculous and bringing healing to all who touched them.

Old folk belief says that from today, the day of the Chains, warmer weather begins. God warms the earth with hot chains.

In Kosovo and Metohija, this holiday is especially respected and celebrated because of the plague, in some places because of livestock, and the herdsmen themselves mark this day.

However, belief has it that whoever wears sewn clothes today may be struck by lightning! It is customary to tie the doorstep with chains today as the home is thus protected from evil forces.

You should not go on a journey today, as you could most easily be struck by lightning, have your sheep slaughtered by wolves… Since the Holy Chains are not a red-letter day, you can do all household chores today.

The Holy Chains have their own prayer, and it is desirable for all believers to recite it. It goes like this:

“Chains, do not leave us, but come to us with the honest chains that you bore, O first-throned apostle; we who offer faith to you, we beg you: through your prayers to God, grant us great mercy.”

Amen.
