Top criminal defense attorneys are already competing to represent Nicolás Maduro, the ousted President of Venezuela, who is in U.S. custody and is set to face charges in federal court in Manhattan, senior CNN legal analyst Eli Honig said.

According to Honig, Maduro’s case is extremely attractive to the most prominent legal names for several reasons. First and foremost, it is a “high-stakes trial” with serious political and legal implications.

Honig also points out that Maduro is “obviously a very wealthy individual,” capable of affording a top-tier defense team. In addition, the trial will be “highly publicized,” which further draws leading lawyers, as major criminal cases are often both professional challenges and opportunities for public visibility.

Finally, Honig notes that the proceedings could raise new questions in constitutional and international law, providing additional motivation for certain lawyers to get involved in a case that, he says, has very few precedents to date.
