Dogs, cats, and parrots are the most common pets in Serbia, but there are also people who have very unusual furry friends. Miroljub Canković from the village of Rakinac near Velika Plana took in a badger cub three years ago. Since then until today, the two of them have become true friends, so used to each other that they even often share meals from the same plate. Jaza, as they call their pet, is adored by the whole family.

-It all started three years ago when I found a small badger cub near the house. I took it in, fed it, and that’s how it all began. It shared the space, the yard, the house with us, and we became true friends; it’s more than just a pet to us. It’s mostly in the yard, it went out onto the road a couple of times, dug holes, and from the last hole it dug, I collected 30 wheelbarrows of soil. It prepared its den, now it’s mostly there, it pulls everything it needs into it, and it comes to us mostly in the evening, when I call it or when it’s hungry, Miroljub tells RINA.

This pensioner points out that there are other animals on the property, pigeons, rabbits, sheep, pigs, dogs, and Jaza gets along well with everyone.

-When it comes out of its den, it usually stops by the dog first and eats if there’s any food left for it, then it comes to us. It eats everything we do, meat, I crumble bread into the leftovers, it likes rosehip jam, I spread it on my palm and let it lick it. We often eat from the same plate, it’s good and peaceful, says this pensioner from Rakinac.

Miroljub believes it’s time for Jaza to find a partner, which is why it built its own house and often spends time there, while it returns to them mostly for food. Miroljub adds that everyone in his family loves Jaza: his wife, daughter-in-law, son, and grandchildren.

Otherwise, the badger belongs to the weasel family and mainly lives underground in tunnels it digs itself. It weighs up to 25 kilograms. It is predominantly a nocturnal animal and belongs to the omnivore group. In our country, hunters often kill it for its fat, which they melt and use as medicine.
