One of the biggest basketball trade bombshells of the century has exploded—Luka Dončić has been traded to the Los Angeles Lakers!

The worldwide exclusive was shared by top NBA insider Shams Charania, who, under the “breaking news” banner, announced that the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks had agreed to a trade sending Luka Dončić to the City of Angels along with Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris, while Anthony Davis heads to Texas!

Since very few could believe what they were reading, Shams Charania had to confirm once again that this was no joke.
“Yes, this is really happening. Find all the details on ESPN’s website,” wrote Shams.

He also reported that the Utah Jazz would serve as the third team in the deal, absorbing surplus contracts and receiving Jalen Hood-Schifino along with two second-round picks for 2025—one from Dallas and the other from the Los Angeles Clippers.

DALLAS INITIATED THE TRADE

As further reports indicate, it was Dallas that first contacted the Lakers’ front office and offered them Dončić! The management of one of the two biggest NBA franchises held an important meeting and concluded that the Slovenian superstar, at just 25 years old, could be the face of not just the team but the entire league for the next decade. This led them to enter deeper negotiations.

Since the Lakers had to part ways with one of their top stars, the choice fell on Anthony Davis—a decision that Dallas viewed as a win-win situation.

The most shocking part of it all? No player had any idea what was happening!
None of them could have foreseen that such a Hollywood-level trade would take place in the early days of February, right before the trade deadline (February 6 at 9 PM CET).

Charania explained that LeBron James had no idea this was in the works, that no one had informed Anthony Davis, and that Luka Dončić was completely stunned when he was told about the trade.

“Everything was handled in complete secrecy. This is probably the most shocking trade I’ve ever been involved in covering in recent NBA history! No one could have imagined this. I’ve been told that Dončić, LeBron, Davis, the coaches, and the players on both teams—none of them knew what was coming. Luka is absolutely shocked by what happened. But let’s look at the bigger picture…

“Dončić is 25 years old, a global superstar, and realistically, everyone thought he was untouchable, that he would never be traded. But what’s shocking is that the Mavericks approached the Lakers a few days ago and offered Dončić. And they knew exactly who they wanted—Anthony Davis. That was the only player they asked for from the start,” said Shams Charania.

“The Lakers had never offered Davis in any trade talks before. But with Jeanie Buss, Rob Pelinka, and the rest of the front office making the decision, they ultimately landed Luka Dončić. Luka’s peak years are still ahead of him, while Davis is at his peak now and wants another championship. Now, he’ll have the chance to chase a ring alongside Kyrie Irving, who is a close friend. Jason Kidd has already coached him as an assistant in Los Angeles when they won a title together. When you put it all together, this move makes a lot of sense—but it’s also the craziest thing that could have happened at this moment.”

Further details reveal that LeBron James was informed just before the trade went down, while having dinner with his family. He was reportedly just as stunned by the news and is still trying to process the fact that Davis is gone—and that Dončić is his new teammate.

WHAT IS THE MAIN REASON FOR THE TRADE?

The primary motivation behind the trade, as reported, was concern within the Mavericks organization about Luka Dončić’s physical condition, including his frequent injury issues and weight fluctuations. Allegedly, the front office grew increasingly frustrated with his lack of discipline regarding diet and training.

Dončić has been limited to just 22 games this season due to various injuries. He has suffered two calf injuries on his left leg and hasn’t played since Christmas.

Reports also highlight that he weighed nearly 120 kilograms (264 lbs) early this season! In November, he missed five games due to injury, dealt with wrist issues, and experienced similar problems throughout the 2022–23 season.

This summer, Dončić was set to receive a five-year, $345 million contract, but due to the trade, he is no longer eligible for a supermax extension, according to ESPN financial expert Bobby Marks.

A TRADE FOR THE HISTORY BOOKS

This trade has already been labeled historic. For the first time ever, two All-Star players have been traded for each other during the season!

The two teams will meet on the court soon—on the night of February 25–26 in Texas. That matchup is set to be an absolute spectacle!
