The greatest Serbian athlete of all time, Novak Đoković, has advanced to the round of 16 at the Australian Open, where he will face Jakub Menšík. As a big supporter of Crvena zvezda, Nole manages to follow EuroLeague events despite the time difference and his obligations, and his words from Melbourne will delight all Red-and-White fans.
Saša Obradović’s team has strung together victories in difficult away games, and Novak, together with the Delije, is once again dreaming big.
“When I wake up in the morning, I break into a sweat when I see the result and watch the highlights, then I read messages from my Zvezda-supporting friends,” Đoković began, as reported by Sportklub.
Asked who his favorite player is, Novak replied with a laugh:
“Oh man, who’s my favorite player? The one who plays best in that particular game.”
Novak said he hopes this season is the time for a breakthrough, and he also revealed a message exchange with a friend who thinks like the average Crvena zvezda fan.
“Honestly, I was surprised. As a fan, I didn’t expect them to string together three away wins. Our momentum dropped a bit after a few losses, and now we’ve… A friend sent me a message: ‘The Final Four hype is starting again.’ That’s where we are — in Final Four hype mode,” Novak said, adding:
“There’s still a lot of basketball to be played. I don’t give myself the right to comment in a professional sense, I watch as a fan. Of course I break into a sweat — much more than when I’m playing my own match, honestly.”
He plans to watch the Zvezda–Olympiacos game in Athens, where he is currently based. He is also already thinking about the Final Four, which will also be held in the Greek capital.
“Now there are some home games coming up, but there’s also one away against Olympiacos — I think I’ll be in Athens then… Whew, I can’t wait for that brotherly duel! I hope — I can’t wait for the Final Four tickets to go on sale, I’m buying them, and then we’ll see what God gives us.”
Novak also commented on Partizan’s big comeback win over Hapoel in Munich.
“Partizan also pulled off something incredible, that was fantastic as well. Congratulations to them too, I hope they pick themselves up a bit. It’s a tense period after Željko’s departure.”
He also had a message for the water polo players who are playing Hungary in the European Championship final.
“Congratulations to the water polo team first of all — Serbia is in the final. I don’t know what else to add; they’ve never disappointed us, they’re always at the top and always fighting for gold. I wish them to win gold against Hungary in front of a full Arena — that’s a great water polo derby,” Novak concluded.
