An Air India plane that crashed on Thursday morning in the city of Ahmedabad struck buildings in a densely populated residential area near the airport. Videos of the plane’s explosion itself and parts of the wreckage protruding from buildings have appeared on social media.
Indian media report that the plane crashed in a densely populated area of Ahmedabad in the west of the country.
The plane took off at 1:38 AM local time and crashed five minutes later, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation announced. The plane was flying to London, where it was scheduled to land at Gatwick Airport after 6 PM local time.

The pilot had 8,200 hours of flight experience, while the co-pilot had 1,100 hours. Shortly after takeoff, the pilot issued a distress call to air traffic control, which was the last communication from the plane to the ground, the Directorate stated.
Videos published on social media show the plane flying low over residential buildings. Instead of ascending, the plane flies lower and lower, and at the moment it disappears from view, a strong explosion is seen.
Initial photographs and videos from the scene show the plane’s “nose” protruding from residential buildings.
