The Basic Court of the provisional institutions in Prizren has ordered 30-day detention for 23 individuals suspected of manipulating votes in the elections for the Assembly of the provisional institutions in Pristina held on December 28.
A one-month detention was ordered for 21 suspects accused of falsifying election results, one suspect accused of both falsifying results and accepting bribes, and one person suspected as an election observer for intimidation and bribery, according to Reporters.
On January 23, 109 people were arrested in Prizren on suspicion of rigging parliamentary election results and favoring certain candidates among the major Albanian parties, with all detainees held for up to 48 hours.
Prizren Chief Prosecutor Petrit Krieziju stated at the time that the total discrepancy after a recount was 68,017 votes, and that only one polling station showed no signs of vote falsification.
The Central Election Commission (CEC) in Pristina ordered a recount of votes for the Assembly of the provisional institutions after significant discrepancies were found in the number of votes for parliamentary candidates in certain municipalities, with the largest deviation reported in Prizren.
CEC representatives said that in the recount, discrepancies in votes for political parties were minimal and nearly negligible, but the results for individual candidates showed major inconsistencies.
From the Pristina Chief Prosecutor’s office, it was announced on January 19 that authorities would begin collecting information on possible abuses during the December 28 elections, according to Tanjug.
