Dušan Borovčanin has resigned as director of the Ekspo 2027 company, which the Serbian Government established as a limited liability company for the organization of the specialized international exhibition to be held in Belgrade from May 15 to August 15, 2027, with the theme “Play for Humanity,” Radar exclusively reports.
The resignation does not mean a “red card,” as Borovčanin will continue to be part of the Ekspo 2027 preparation team, just in a different position, the same sources state.
Although the Business Registers Agency still lists Borovčanin as the sole legal representative of the Ekspo 2027 company, it is certain that he will soon hand over this position to someone else whom the executive branch deems capable of doing the job “faster, better, stronger.”
Radar has learned that the government has practically already appointed the new director, but will officially install him on August 1.
Danilo Jerinić Takes the Helm
Well-informed circles close to the authorities state that the head position in the Ekspo 2027 company will soon be taken over by the current operations director within the enterprise, Danilo Jerinić, who in recent weeks has already been a frequent guest on national television channels such as RTS, Prva, and Pink.
Jerinić confirmed to Radar in an exclusive statement that Borovčanin remains part of the team and is transitioning to the role of director’s advisor for communication with the International Bureau of Exhibitions and participating countries.
“Ekspo is entering a new stage of development that entails a transition from the phase of planned and strategic project preparation to the phase of its direct realization on the ground. We have a year and a half of difficult operational and field work ahead of us, where the company head needs to transition from the role of preparation and planned development, which Borovčanin performed excellently, practically to the role of head of operations at the construction site itself. This is the role I have been performing in Ekspo so far, and I believe I can contribute the most in this role. I hope to justify the trust placed in me and finalize the realization of this extremely important project for our country,” Danilo Jerinić stated in a brief written statement to Radar.
Possible Reasons for Borovčanin’s Resignation
The motives for Borovčanin’s resignation can only be speculated upon for now, until the resignation text and its explanation are presented to the public.
One possible reason is that the executive branch, for whom Ekspo 2027 is a main asset and a top priority project, intends to accelerate the construction of the complex and is seeking a more agile director for this.
On the other hand, unlike the National Stadium, for which Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said that construction is several months behind schedule and that he expects some of the delays to be compensated during the summer months, Borovčanin stated on May 15 that work on the Ekspo 2027 complex is “progressing according to plan” and that “the pavilions and buildings where representatives of participating countries will live during the international exhibition, as well as during preparations for Ekspo, have risen far beyond their foundations.”
Another reason could be that the government realized the situation has become serious and that it needs a director who can communicate even with dissenters. This is especially true given the significant public resistance, and the “Kreni-promeni” (Start-Change) movement recently sent an official letter, with the signatures of 119,829 citizens, requesting the International Bureau of Exhibitions to cancel the “mini Ekspo” due to non-compliance with laws, insufficient transparency, and because the state expanded the complex for the project from the originally planned 119 to as much as 813 hectares.
