He decided not to run from love, and how he managed to reach an agreement at home is detailed below.
Elmedin Karić (32) from Busovača lives in a marriage with two women, something he says he has always dreamed of. They currently reside on a property they plan to pay off, and have recently acquired 80 hens, as Elmedin is tired of working in Germany and missing out on time with his children.
How They Made the Decision
Elmedin already had a wife and three children but could not resist the dream he nurtured since childhood—to live in the same house with two women who would accept each other.
“I lived with my first wife for ten years. We have three sons, but even as a young man I thought about having two wives, two women at the same time. I met Jana in Germany, and this will be our second year together. I didn’t want to lie to her or my wife. I immediately told her I have a wife and three kids, but I’m Muslim and have the right to four, so if she wants, she can agree. She said she was in love with me and would accept it,” Elmedin explained.
“I came from Germany, where I was working, to Bosnia and told my wife and my parents. I said I have another woman and I want to bring her here. They thought I was joking. There were tears from my wife, but I told her I love her, that I will never leave her, and that with her I have three sons, but my wish is to have another wife alongside her. Better to have them both here than to travel the world and cheat,” he added.
Jana’s Loss
Jana, originally from Ukraine, experienced a family loss, and Elmedin stayed steadfast, refusing to let her go alone into war-torn Ukraine, where they spent two and a half months together.
“She said she was going to Ukraine, and I didn’t want to let her go alone. I said I’d drive her there. She was skeptical because of the war, but I said, ‘I’m going with you.’ I told her either I’ll die there with you or we return alive. That’s a firm decision because I love her. I told everyone—I really love her,” he said.
Trip to Ukraine
“We went to Ukraine. It was dangerous there. I didn’t believe rockets could do such damage, but there were so many. They bombarded every day. We survived, stayed there for two and a half months, then returned to Bosnia. But my father and mother did not agree with me bringing another wife. My father said he would not see two women in the house. I understand him. I said it’s fine, I won’t live with him, but I want to maintain good relations with him and my mother,” Elmedin explained.
The House
Back in Bosnia, his father opposed the idea of two wives, but that did not stop Elmedin. He said love was stronger than everything and decided to take control, ensuring an independent life for himself, his two wives, and three children.
“No one lives in this house. Dino, a good man in Zenica, I called him, explained the situation, and asked him to rent it to me. He said he was sick and would sell it to me. I said I didn’t have the finances, but he told me we could arrange payment over six years. That’s how we agreed. I’ve been here for just 15 days. I got 80 laying hens. Now I have their eggs, selling them in the village. I can’t even support one wife with chickens, let alone two. Maybe I’ll try farming with sheep, cows, or machines,” Elmedin said.
Neighbors’ Reactions
“Some look favorably, some unusually. I’m the first in this community to do something like this. It’s unusual to have two wives in the same house and for them to function like sisters. Everything is done in agreement—if one tends the chickens, the other looks after the kids,” he said.
Sleeping Arrangements
Asked by Srećko Stipović, who posted the story on his YouTube channel, how he manages sleeping arrangements, Elmedin explained:
“I sleep in one room with one wife, while the other is with the kids in the adjacent room. The next night the second wife sleeps with me, and the first goes to the kids. It doesn’t matter that she’s not their mother—they love her, and my children respect her as if she were. I told my eldest, who is in school, to respect Jana since she just arrived. We all live together, so they respect each other,” he said.
Fatima
Fatima, his first wife, has been with him for ten years. They have three sons. She described her reaction when Elmedin proposed bringing another wife.
“I found messages on the phone, later I asked, and he told me about her. That affected me. Over time I got used to it and accepted it. I’m satisfied with him, we have children. We don’t have mutual problems. When they went to Ukraine, I cried and didn’t sleep the first few days, but I got used to it. Living as three is easier,” Fatima said.
