Professor of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (PMF) in Novi Sad, Sanja Kojić, stated today that on the evening of September 5, the police fired the dangerous gas CN at students, professors, and citizens on the campus of the Novi Sad university, which can cause severe and permanent health problems.

“Our students, despite the repression, came out of the building that evening and collected evidence, which they then analyzed in an accredited laboratory. In one of the ampules, they found a terrifying truth: they discovered the substance CN,” said Sanja Kojić at a protest on the Campus of the University of Novi Sad.

She added that this is irrefutable evidence that cannot be influenced in court, as everything was done in accordance with scientific procedures.

“CN is a toxic agent, declared as a chemical warfare agent. It causes permanent consequences for vision, problems with respiratory organs, and skin changes. Unfortunately, that evening I saw all those symptoms in several students and citizens. Such substances cannot be used on civilians, in populated areas. And that was applied that night against all of us,” explained Sanja Kojić.

She added that the police must leave the University Campus, because it is “not a training ground for repression.”

PMF students announced last night that they had determined through laboratory analyses that the police used CN gas against students, professors, and other citizens on that campus on September 5.

Students in the PMF blockade posted on social networks that the results of laboratory analyses confirmed that the police used CS and CN gases.

“Due to its high toxicity and serious health consequences, CN gas was completely replaced by CS gas in the 1970s, which became a standard crowd control agent in police practice and the military. Our message is clear: the use of CN gas is not a means of control, but a poisoning of our own citizens,” the students said in a statement.

They added that they demand an investigation and criminal responsibility for those who allowed the use of such a dangerous gas.

They recommended that citizens and police officers use masks with filters, as only they provide protection from CN and CS gases.

“To the members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and all relevant government bodies, we say that we are ready to hand over a part of our collected samples for additional analysis. We are not afraid of the truth and we stand by our results. Will you finally show courage and transparency or will you continue to hide what the public has the right to know?” the students asked.

PMF students say that after the protest and the use of force on September 5, they saw police officers with flashlights collecting fired canisters of chemical agents.

They added that they themselves therefore collected all available evidence, including canisters of fired chemical agents, to give them for independent analysis and thereby clarify whether ordinary tear gas or other agents of an illegal and potentially dangerous nature were used.

Several dozen unmarked canisters were collected, and on some, traces of the removal of markings can be seen, they stated in the announcement.

They added that all analyses were done using the same method that is used in all accredited laboratories worldwide, using gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

On the evening of September 5, the police brutally intervened against demonstrators on the university campus in Novi Sad, and in addition to the demonstrators, some police officers were seen vomiting after the effect of the tear gas.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Serbia denied the students’ claims and stated that it does not possess CN gas.

The President of the Assembly of Serbia, Ana Brnabić, assessed that the students’ claims were “another call for civil war, a cruel and dangerous deception of the public, and a spreading of panic” and called for action by the prosecutor’s office.
