Relja Stanojević has been free since last night after spending two weeks in detention following an incident at a protest in Novi Sad. He told N1 that in detention, “there are no rights” and that “totally inhumane conditions” prevail.

“Yesterday, I was released from detention, and I’m still shocked by the whole situation. I sincerely express my condolences to the families of the victims. I’m fine, though everything is still mixed up in my head. I’m holding on and trying to find a positive perspective in all of this,” said Relja Stanojević.

He explained that it is true that detainees were subjected to inhumane conditions.

“That’s absolutely true. There are no rights there. There are all kinds of people there — but they are still people. When you’re in such an institution, you feel like there’s nothing within five kilometers of you, as if you’re in the middle of a desert, bombarded by regime-controlled channels on the only TV in the room. It’s not fit for humans. The conditions are totally inhumane,” Stanojević stated.

Relja added that he participated in the protest as a student and a member of the Academy of Arts.

“I primarily went out to the streets to pay tribute to the victims, and I think that’s the goal of every person on the street at this moment. I joined as a student and as a member of the Academy of Arts. It was only in detention that I began to learn about the judicial system and how it operates. That’s a problem that exists — the systems don’t work together,” he explained.

Stanojević also expressed gratitude for the support he received during his detention.

“When you’re there, you get half an hour with your family per week. During that time, when my family read me a letter from some unknown person offering support, it meant a lot to me. I still haven’t even scratched the surface of everything that’s happening; I still don’t even have my phone,” said Stanojević.
