Student Vladimir Đorđević from Valjevo was beaten and arrested during a protest in his city, and today he sent a video message from the hospital, describing the details of the brutal attack.

“This is what happens when you go out to protest to support students and their demands. A group of five guys from Priboj beat me brutally in my hometown. I also told the prosecutor that I grew up with a single mother and worked for a daily wage since I was 13, and I have had two jobs since I was 18. I had neither the time, nor the company, nor the money to participate in any fights. Those guys insulted me, then beat me for two minutes like a carcass until an inspector came to pick me up,” Đorđević said. After the incident, he adds, he was transferred to the police station, where he vomited due to his health condition and asked for help.

“They gave it to me, I can’t be ungrateful, but they transferred me to jail afterward. They are charging me with assaulting an official, as well as who knows how many other people they pulled out of bakeries and taxis,” the student said.

Đorđević particularly emphasized the brutality he saw during the arrest.

“I have never in my life witnessed such police brutality. There was also a guy who was pulled out of a taxi. They beat him like a horse and wrote down assault on an official. I was driven and transferred to the hospital because of my health condition. All those who beat people in Valjevo will not go unpunished,” he said.

The student also appealed for the protection of his family, especially his mother.

“My mother is a single parent and lives in an apartment we took out a loan for five years ago. Now she is there alone, and thugs came to visit and intimidate her. To all of you who think you will succeed in intimidating us with fear and beatings – you won’t. The fight continues. The country will be free, sooner or later,” he said.

The incident in Valjevo caused reactions from the public and the media, while students and citizens continue to demand the protection of their rights and safety at protests.
