A three-day work stoppage by lawyers will begin in Serbia today as a sign of protest against the amendment of judicial laws, also known as “Mrdic’s laws,” the Bar Association of Serbia (AKS) announced.
In the decision published on the AKS website on February 11, the Chamber called on the competent authorities to take “measures within their jurisdiction and invalidate the adopted set of amendments to judicial laws,” under the threat of a work stoppage by lawyers on the territory of Serbia from February 23 to 25.
Since there was no reaction, as the Chamber claims, the implementation of the strike on the territory of the whole of Serbia was announced.
During the three-day suspension, lawyers will not act before courts, prosecutor’s offices, state bodies, nor in proceedings before public bailiffs and notaries, except in urgent cases and cases provided for by law.
These include cases in which the defendants are in custody, proceedings concerning minors, domestic violence, or actions related to deadlines whose omission would cause damage to the parties.
Also, for Tuesday, February 24, the Chamber convened the fifth extraordinary session of the AKS Assembly, which will discuss the proposal of the Memorandum on the impact of amendments to judicial laws on the rule of law, the autonomy of the public prosecutor’s office, and the independence of the judiciary in the Republic of Serbia.
The leadership of the chamber claims that the current three-day suspension was voted on February 11 at a meeting of the Board of Directors, while some lawyers dispute that decision and announce that they will not respect it.
