A stowaway was found dead in the landing gear compartment of an American Airlines plane in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Sunday morning, police said.

The plane landed at Charlotte Douglas International Airport from Europe, CBS News reports.

Maintenance crews found the body, and responding police officers pronounced the person dead, according to a statement from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

A spokesperson for American Airlines said the airline is cooperating with law enforcement on the investigation.

This is at least the second time this year that stowaways have been found in landing gear bays at US airports.

In January, two dead stowaways were found in the landing gear compartment of a JetBlue aircraft at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
