At least 20 U.S. states have declared a state of emergency due to severe weather and a massive snowstorm. More than 180 million people are on alert for the storm stretching from New Mexico to Maine, which is expected to paralyze the southern U.S. with ice and snow, reports ABC News.
States that have declared emergencies include Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
The nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., has also declared a state of emergency.
U.S. media report that Sunday, January 25, is set to be remembered as one of the days with the highest number of flight cancellations in U.S. aviation history, with over 8,000 flights already canceled.
American Airlines has canceled 37% of its total flights, while about 85% of flights at New York’s LaGuardia Airport have been canceled.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is pre-positioning resources for the storm, including supplies and equipment, according to an internal planning document reviewed by ABC News.
At Minden Camp in Louisiana, FEMA has prepared 250,000 meals, 400,000 liters of water, and 30 generators, the document states.
U.S. President Donald Trump urged citizens to stay safe and keep warm.
“I have just approved emergency declarations for Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Indiana, and West Virginia. We are working closely with FEMA, governors, and state emergency management teams to ensure everyone’s safety. Stay safe and stay warm,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
