The Serbian diaspora organization in Belgium, “Thumbs Up” (Palac gore), has sent an open letter to EU institutions and international human rights bodies, demanding immediate action in response to police violence and human rights violations in Serbia.
“In recent days, we have witnessed continuous brutal treatment of peaceful student demonstrators and citizens on the streets… We call on institutions, organizations, and individuals to raise their voices and refuse to remain silent in the face of injustice. If democracy is important to you, this is the moment to stand up and act,” the organization stated in a press release.
They are urging the European Commission to immediately engage with Serbian authorities, condemn the violence, and demand an independent investigation into police conduct. They also call on the European Parliament to put the citizens’ resistance and the regime’s response on the agenda of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) and the Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI), and to initiate an urgent resolution.

The “Thumbs Up” organization is asking the Council of the EU to reconsider Serbia’s progress within the EU accession process in light of these events and to condition future progress on tangible measures for human rights protection.
They also called on human rights organizations and civil society organizations to increase their engagement in disseminating information about endangered individuals and to ensure independent monitoring of the situation and legal support for victims of abuse.
“Silence in the face of brutality is complicity,” stated the Serbian diaspora organization “Thumbs Up” in Belgium in their appeal to EU institutions.
