Serbian tennis star Novak Đoković has advanced directly to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open after his opponent, Jakub Menšík, decided to withdraw from the tournament, announcing the news himself on his Instagram profile. A shocking move that no one saw coming.
On paper, Menšík was expected to be Đoković’s toughest challenge at the tournament, especially after defeating the Serbian in the Miami final last year, shocking the tennis world.
Fans were eagerly anticipating the clash between Đoković and Menšík, a meeting of the “old school” and “new school” of tennis, but this time, it will not happen.
Menšík announced his decision in a post on Instagram, issuing a short statement:
“This is difficult to write. After doing everything we could to continue, I have to withdraw from the Australian Open due to an abdominal muscle injury that worsened during my recent matches. After long discussions with my team and doctors, we decided that I will not take the court tomorrow.
Although I am disappointed, reaching the 4th round here for the first time is something I will carry with me for a long time. I felt the incredible energy of the crowd, and the atmosphere in Melbourne was truly special.
Thank you to my team for being with me every step of the way and to everyone who sent messages and cheered me on — it means more than you realize. Now it’s time to recover properly.”
With Menšík’s withdrawal, Đoković advances directly to the Australian Open quarterfinals without playing the match.
