Police in the U.S. state of Alabama have arrested 70-year-old Hamdija Alukić on charges of war crimes in Bosnia and Herzegovina during 1992.

According to U.S. media reports, Alukić is accused of participating in attacks on two cars carrying civilians, as well as setting several houses on fire while people were inside them, Klix portal reported.

These alleged war crimes, according to court documents in Baldwin County, took place in the Prijedor region in 1992.

The 261-page indictment states that Alukić and a “Muslim paramilitary formation” organized these attacks knowing that there were no soldiers in the houses and cars.

His former neighbors commented on the case for local media, saying it is “completely crazy” that Alukić has been arrested.

“They had dogs and chickens, they sold eggs to Walmart. They were always great. I used to go to their house as a child, they were true foreigners. They didn’t know much English,” said one former neighbor.

At present, the court in this part of the U.S. is considering whether to extradite Alukić to Bosnia and Herzegovina, given that the alleged crimes were committed on the territory of BiH.

In the meantime, Alukić has been released to defend himself from freedom, according to the sheriff’s office.
